Title: Port Captain
Position: Full-time Salaried/Exempt
Reports to: VP of Operations
Division: River
Location: Paducah, KY
Principal Responsibilities:

Select, supervise, evaluate and train vessel managers and their subordinates.

Serve as primary liaison between vessel management and shore side personnel.

Responsible for maintaining good working relationships with all vessel employees.

Assure vessel compliance with all governmental regulations and Company policies.

Monitor river conditions and make available information necessary to support navigational decisions.

Administer company policies including disciplinary actions.

Discipline employees up to and including discharge.

Represent and articulate Company positions in response to US Coast Guard or regulatory agency initiatives or proposals impacting navigation or vessel operations.

Ensure good public relations are maintained with local, state and federal agencies.

Develop and implement policies and procedures to enhance safety and efficiency in the operation.

Interface with other Company personnel including sales and logistics, repair, finance, purchasing, crew, human resources and claims departments.

Improve job knowledge by attending workshops; reviewing professional publications; establishing personal networks; benchmarking practices; participating in professional and industry groups.

Conduct performance evaluations

Comply with the Safety Management System in support of continual improvement and management objectives.

Other assigned duties.
Qualifications:
-
High School education minimum.
-
Possess a US Coast Guard Merchant Mariners License, Master Towing Vessels license preferred.

5-10 years of vessel operations experience on the inland waterways.

Tanker/Barge experience not required but preferred.

Strong communication and interpersonal skills.

Self-start and ability to perform a variety of complicated tasks with moderate supervision.

Microsoft Office skills.
-
40% travel to vessels.

Must be willing to stand weekend/evening duty.

Must have working knowledge of modern navigation software.

Well versed on regulatory requirements and vessel inspections.

Demonstrated skills in supervising a large group of employees, training and employee development.

Proven history of problem resolution skills.
